"60 Minutes" on Kurdistan
Feb. 20th, 2007 09:44 pmExcellent "60 Minutes" clip on Kurdistan. This corresponds with reports I've read on the Kurds by Michael Totten and Michael Yon.
As I've grown increasingly disillusioned with the whole Iraq experiment, I remain hopeful that we may come out of this with one true ally: the Kurds. The Sunni Iraqis I fear will never forgive us for removing Saddam and knocking them out of power, and the Shia haven't forgotten the way we left them to Saddam's mercies after the '91 war (paranoia added to the influence of Iran on groups like al-Sadr's Mahdi Army).
So, while I find the Kurds intensely pro-American attitudes amazingly refreshing, I would caution them as a friend not to trust too much in the United States. We have a history of abandoning our allies when it became politically expedient to do so, and expecting the U.S. to remain steadfastly by their side is probably a bad bet. I hope for their sake they are making quiet preparations to look to their own interests, when the time comes.
