We went by La Conchita CA while we were in California; this is the small coastal community where a landslide killed 10 in 2005. Via the California Coastal Project, here's before (2004) and after (2006) photos of the landslide area. Interestingly, the retaining wall in the center of the image actually did its job; it broke, but most of the damage was to the east of the wall. I note that in the newest photo of the area (from 2008) the damage to the retaining wall is still there. This aerial photo shows that while its probably a neat place to live - small-town feel along the CA coast - its also just a matter of time before the next major landslide there.
