In my view, using the deaths to make a political point is exploitative. More to the point, if a political statement is what is meant, then the organizers should *say* that's what it is. Trying to hide behind it being a "memorial" if it is really meant to be a political statement is dishonest.
I don't think everything *is* political, but even if one does believe that, I don't think that necessarily translates to 'therefore everything is fair game,' which IMHO too often the "personal is political" meme gets interpreted as meaning.
