Well, all of Schwarzenegger's reform initiatives went down in defeat yesterday. I suppose it shouldn't have been a surprise, but I do wonder sometimes: if the electorate is happy with things as they are, why bother to kick out Grey Davis in the first place? It seems clear to me the legislature will regard the Gov as a lame duck now and just try to wait him out until after next year's elections, rather than seeing any reason to reach compromise on issues.

A couple of the propositions were close enough that they may get life in some future variation, but things like giving the Governor more leeway on spending cuts and redistricting reforms are dead-dead-dead after going down so decisively. No politician's going to want to touch them for a number of years now. But, again, that's what the people wanted.

And have to say, after the unions spent nearly $100 million to defeat Prop. 75 (vs. about $10 million by supporters), it lends more truth to the old Bloom County strip, where the county's Senator is addressing a classroom of students:
Sen. Bedfellow: And as your Senator ... I'm tickled to be here today, chatting with all of you ... um ... future voters ... yessir ... now ... Can any of you little nits tell me which great principle our political system is based upon?
Milo: "Money talks".

Bedfellow: HMPH ... Yes, well, the other great principle ...
Milo: "MONEY TALKS".

Bedfellow: Watch your tongue, boy, or somebody might CUT IT OFF.
Milo: MONEY TALKS!
Teacher: Milo ...

{UPDATE}: It also bears mentioning that propositions on redistricting and campaign contributions were voted down by large margins in Ohio.
