Newstopia!
Mar. 31st, 2008 08:17 pmI've become a big fan of Australian comic Shaun Micallef ever since running across clips of his skit comedy The Micallef Programme on Youtube. Unfortunately, it turns out that the show ended in 2001. However...
Micallef has started hosting a program called Newstopia since late last year. Think of it as "Colbert Report" with an Australian slant and drier humour. SBS, the Australian network, blocks non-AU addresses from watching the program online (why?), but again, Youtube comes to the rescue. I think the intros to season one gives a good feel to the show. Oh, yeah, this definitely fits my sense of humor to a tee.
I also learned about an obscure aspect of Australian culture. Down Under, one of the most popular TV shows is an Austrian production about a crimestopping German shepherd titled "Kommissar Rex" (no, I'm not kidding). The Newstopia satires of them are commercials for "Inspector Herring," about the adventures of a detective fish. Examples here and here.
