Moderation in online communities
Nov. 29th, 2004 07:56 pmOver at Windsofchange.net, there's an interesting discussion going on about whether the site should pre-emptively ban users who have trolled at other discussion sites. The comments section is quite interesting, with an number of informative links. One I especially liked was the text to a speech by Clay Shirky titled "A Group Is Its Own Worst Enemy". I especially liked the examples of groups which self-destructed because they either wouldn't or couldn't moderate themselves, and also how the lessons from each experience were quickly forgotten & the same mistakes repeated over again.
Another good one was Varifrank's entry on how to discourse online.
Less serious, but as entertaining, was the Internet Message Board Wandering Monster Table.
