I think Friedman may be overanalyzing this a bit, and as the saying goes, be careful not to attribute to deviousness what can be explained by incompetence. And Iran's Qods Force has been harbouring al-Qaeda refugees from Afghanistan for years, something his analysis doesn't address well. Those reservations aside, he may be onto something.
