1.Elaborate on your default icon.
It is me in front of the Ananadapur sign in at the Animal Kingdom park, Walt Disney World, circa 2001. The blue blob is a raincoat. I think its one of the better pictures of me, and thank goodness I scanned it in back then, since the original has disappeared. The other one I use somewhat frequently, on political or controversial entries, is of a guy grasping two handfuls of sand and screaming - it is a screencap from the SciFi series "Dune", of Liet just before his death.
2. What's your current relationship status?
Happily married, 4+ years now.
3. Ever have a near-death experience?
Not in terms of out-of-body, no. But have had about six incidents now where a few seconds or a few feet made a big difference, yes.
4. Name an obvious quality you have.
I think everybody would say I'm pretty quiet, at least initially. A lot of this is temperament: my mom will tell you that even as a kid I wasn't one to speak up much. That has its good qualities and its bad qualities...and remember, a lot of the time its the quiet ones you need to watch out for the most.
5. What's the name of the song that's stuck in your head right now?
None at the moment, but the darn Washington Redskins song was playing on sports radio when I was driving Donna to the airport yesterday, and its pretty catchy.
6. Any celeb you would marry?
Sorry, not interested. I like the gal I have just fine.
7. Has anyone ever said you look like a celebrity?
Not a celebrity, but I guess my features are bland enough that people mistake me for someone else from time to time. Can't help that.
8. Do you wear a watch? What kind?
Yes, $15 made-in-China water-resistant watch from K-Mart I bought after losing the last generic watch I had, which replaced the one before that, etc. It tells the time, the date, and I use it as a timer for jogging. I don't need more from it. I wear it military-style (face on wrist) on my left hand.
9. Do you have anything pierced?
Nope.
10. Do you have any tattoos?
Nope.
11. Do you like pain?
Not particularly. That's why dentists and Tylenol were invented.
12. Do you like to shop?
Well, -ish. I enjoy finding a bargain, and looking for something I want, but I was dragged to enough fabric stores and Sears discount outlets as a kid to find the process itself to be tedious. Online shopping has been a boon.
13. What was the last thing you paid for with cash?
Dine-in at a local pizza parlor with my mom and wife.
14. What was the last thing you paid for with your credit card?
1 can opener, 1 bottle of ibuprofen, 1 package of bandages, and a sample bottle of Listerine at the local Giant supermarket.
15. Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone?
My wife, who's current back in California.
16. What is on your desktop background?
Shinto gates to the Yasukuni Shrine in Japan at dusk.
17. What is the background on your cell phone?
Generic Virgin Mobile phone background.
18. Do you like redheads?
Have nothing against them. Is the redhead in question amicable or an a******e?
19. Do you know any twins?
Yes, but not identical.
20. Do you have any weird relatives?
In terms of weird-neat, Donna's cousin Babs is really cool, balanced, and open to trying new things. In terms of weird-strange? Probably not. One branch of the family I would describe as sedevacanist Catholics. We have our share of mental illnesses and addictions as well. But that just seems semi-normal by now. I do have one cousin who hit the lottery, but that's more unusual than weird.

PotC: Dead Man's Chest.
22. What was the last book you read?
Well, have been re-reading Marjorie Williams "The Woman at the Washington Zoo" in short bursts. Its a collection of her essays covering the Washington political scene, including one great one on the Clinton-Gore relationship and eventual implosion. The second half concerns her experiences fighting liver cancer; the book was published after her death.
