Today is the tenth anniversary of the death of Michael Hedges..

Michael remains my favorite guitarist to listen to. He was 43 years old when he died, old enough to have accomplished a lot and feel comfortable in one's skin, and I think he was from the interviews of him I've heard. But Michael still gave the sense that he was changing and evolving, and it would have been delightful to see what his future creations would have been. Alas, that was not to be. As it stands, Hedges' legacy is as one who revolutionized how the acoustic guitar is played. Unlike many "guitar wizards", though, I like to think his work has stood the test of time not just for its technical worth, but also because of the heart that MH put into his playing.

Aerial Boundaries. One of his early breakthrough pieces.

Ignition. Michael said this one was inspired by reading "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" by Sogyal Rinpoche, and was his attempt at capturing the effect in music of what Rinpoche called "ground luminosity": upon dying, you see the whole world "ignite" with the energy which passes through all things.

Finally, The Naked Stalk/Jealous Tunnel/About Face. One of Michael's more introspective pieces off of his autobiographical album Taproot
