Our '01 Mitsubishi Mirage had the battery die over the weekend, and I had it towed to our mechanic in town yesterday. I walked about six miles back to our house, in about an hour and a half; fortunately we were enjoying a spat of very nice weather with temps in the 60s, so it wasn't nearly as unpleasant as it could have been. Its interesting the stuff you notice by walking that isn't at all obvious when you're just driving by, like the sheer volume of the detritus/junk that accumulates along the road: lots of little plastic bits and ripped plastic bags, crushed plastic bottles, etc. Also noticed a couple obscure "KEEP OUT - NO TRESPASSING!" gates tucked along the side of the road that are all but invisible to motorists, a number of different swampy areas that are obscured by the tree line, and so on.

I'm glad I was wearing my comfortable sneakers, since I've been having trouble with my ankle after twisting in while running a couple of weeks ago, and the extra support was a big help. I've actually been wearing sneaks to work the past week, and it does seem to have helped heal up the ankle. I've also been working out on the elliptical instead of the treadmill at the gym, again trying to give the ankle a chance to mend.

Anyway, it did bring back to mind an old saying, that you can walk your way out of a lot of trouble if you just put one foot in front of the other. On the other hand...I take the bus to work each day, which is about a 20 mile one-way trip. After today I know I could physically probably walk back home in an emergency, though it would take the better part of a day. The problem would be more navigating through the panic that would probably be setting in to the general populace if a situation came up where normal transportation wasn't running, and figuring out in time that I'd have to walk my way out of trouble, and that help wasn't coming. One of the lessons from Hurricane Katrina was that there will come times when you're on your own, and sitting around waiting for the authorities to bail you out can be the worst thing to do.

Oh yes, and the car? I'd left the overhead light on overnight. D'oh!
