Got a new job!

Well, as it were. I started substitute teaching for a local school district last week. The district is local high schools and junior HSs, which is the level I was hoping for. I had to pass a basic competency test and a background check before getting certified in California to teach as a sub, it all finally came through last month. So far the commutes have been under 1 hour, the pay is fairly good, and the variety of classes has been better than I expected. The big bonus for me is that the schedule is flexible, as I'll be needing to take off some time at intervals for my dissertation work, something that would be more difficult with a typical part-time job.

In my assignments so far, I've been expected to at least be able to answer student's questions and direct the class along the lesson plan given. I actually prefer being more of a "real teacher" than just a babysitter, but I guess with the shift towards standardized testing of minimum standards by CA and other states, teachers figure they can't afford to write off a whole day with unrelated/"busy" work, there's just so much to cover as it is. Not sure.
