Memorial Day weekend
May. 27th, 2008 12:30 pmWe had a nice weekend. Our friends Ron and Meg were in town visiting from L.A., we went out on a cruise of lighthouses on the Chesapeake Bay on Sunday. Couldn't ask for better weather; should have a few pictures up soon. We had a good time just talking and having them around. We had a BBQ yesterday, I think I'm getting better at learning how to use the grill; at least this time I only had to reignite the coals once before getting a decent slowburn going.
I also went jogging yesterday and took a route by a local farm that sells strawberries...and by local, I mean less than a mile away as the crow flies. If these aren't the sweetest strawberries I've ever eaten, I can't recall better. We've definitely got to stock up before the season ends in a couple of weeks.
I'm admittedly impatient with my garden, I want the tomatoes and peppers NOW. Stopping by a big nursery on the way home from Annapolis on Sunday didn't help, seeing how some of their tomatoes already have fruit on theirs while mine are still in the growing phase, at least weeks away from flowers, much less fruit. We did get the first flower on one of the pepper plants, though, so at least that's starting. There's also small apples on both apple trees; I spent some of Friday cleaning out dead branches from the trees. They both must be fairly old, since most of the lowest underlying branches have already died off, even though the trees themselves are doing well.
