An article in Slate goes into the systemic reasons behind why emergency rooms in hospitals are so crowded. I've seen this firsthand, both in MD and CA. It sure sounds like even if you have an emergency, you're much better off if you can get your personal doctor to admit you than taking your chances showing up at the ER.
