One of the things I missed when we switched from cable to DirecTV is that the Weather Channel did not offer localized forecasts during its "Local on the 8s" feature, so we got national forecasts instead: OK, but not quite the same thing. This was because the satellite feed being downloaded didn't have a way to ID where the signal was going to, AFAIK.
Well, last night we noticed that we were getting individualized forecasts for our ZIP code via our TWC feed. Here's the press release which details the enhancements: seems we're also going to get local weather alerts as well. Cool. I think this is working off the ZIP code which users enter into the DirecTV receiver box configuration menu, so it may not work if that hasn't been input. (apparently this has been in place since late September)
Given Comcast's announced plans to hike rates again next year despite record profits, moving to DirecTV suddenly looks even better than it did.
