The Esmay pledge(s)
Nov. 3rd, 2008 09:18 pmOn the eve of the election, I thought Vinod's collection of pre-election pledges from '04 (including his own) was worth reloading, as well as Mike Totten's and Armed Liberal's. Its a different election, and not as many of these showing up this year (though Rich Moran's was excellent) but the principles remain as valid. Hyperpartisanship of both sides is a huge contributor to the problems in the political system today (example from '04: Oliver Willis' counterpost to the pledges, "Not My President". Also check out the comments from the various 'pledge' pages, plenty of that in there), and I think too many have forgotten the fundamental truth that was brought home to us after 9-11: we're all in the same boat. Or, as Ben Franklin put it, "we must all hang together, or surely we will hang separately." Whoever the next President is, I hope he shows good judgment, makes good decisions, and serves the people well. Where I seriously disagree with the POTUS' decisions, I'll say so, but I'll always try to maintain a sense of context and balance in doing so.
Along the same vein, it'll be interesting to see if Jane Galt's law is still in effect, and we're about to see the big flip in action again:
Jane's Law: The devotees of the party in power are smug and arrogant. The devotees of the party out of power are insane.

Date: 2008-11-04 05:33 am (UTC)As I have done with this POTUS. Unfortunately, even within a sense of context and balance, there is no excuse for the job the current POTUS has done, and I will be gladly rid of him.
I look forward to your balance and sense of context in evaluating the next POTUS.
