Right now, it sounds like Hurricane Katrina is the worst disaster to hit the U.S. since September 11th. According to news reports from WWL in New Orleans, there's large breaches in the Lake Pontchartrain levees through which the lake waters are pouring into downtown New Orleans which is lower than the lake, so the water level is actually rising as time goes by. Because of the increasing flooding, getting the necessary equipment to the levees to close the holes is impossible right now; there is speculation of using helicopters to fly in huge sandbags to fill the gaps and floating barges down to provide electricity, but its all very ad-hoc right now. Martial law has been declared for the city, and there's fears of a widespread public health crisis once mosquitoes start breeding in the vast new underwater sections.
