Got back from our trip to London on Tuesday, we were in the UK for a little under 2 weeks. Got to see the Tower of London, the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum, the National Army Museum, the National Gallery, and Harrods, as well as taking trips out to Canterbury, Dover, and Cambridge. Donna and our friend Paula also took a trip up to the Lake District and saw Hadrian's Wall. We finished it off by seeing Chris de Burgh at the Royal Albert Hall the night before going back.
A few quick observations:
- Never had any problems with being an American overseas in the UK, didn't even get a comment on my accent, though it must have been obvious. On the flip side, I was mostly able to understand London English, though I suspect years of watching Dr. Who as a young'un probably helped with that.
- Everything seemed a little smaller in England. That's not meant as a slam - in a lot of cases, grocery portions for example, the size was "just right" for what we needed. Made me realize how much "supersizing" actually goes on in the the USA.
- I packed too light, I had a light jacket and was definitely not ready when the weather turned cold and windy. Could have used a heavier jacket and gloves.
- Business class air travel is GREAT! Larger, more comfortable seats, better service, more and better food - just an overall more pleasant travelling experience than coach. Our thanks to our friend Paula for making the trip possible.
