I find it hard to disagree with much of anything in commissar's "Why I Am Voting Democratic in 2006" post, though I'm more in the a-pox-on-both-your-houses camp. That's a big reason why I haven't been making many posts on politics or Iraq in the past half-year or so.

I don't think the republic is doomed, as elf and mdlbear believe. The nation is more resilient and powerful than that. But can anyone persuasively argue that we're heading in the right direction...or, for that matter, that either party looks like they have a clue what that "right direction" might be?

When it comes to the gubernatorial election, I'm probably voting Green this year. I mean, Schwarzenegger's election year policies are pleasantly (and rather deceptively) centrist, but his non-election-year policies are just too plutocratic for my tastes; on the other paw, Phil Angelides has done absolutely NOTHING to impress me, and I'm not voting for him just because he's not Schwarzenegger. Besides, Angelides' attack ads on his opponent in the Primary were just bloody awful.

What a mess.

There's a certain entrenched complacency in the California Dem party that makes it really, really hard to want to support them. Rumors continue to circulate that Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of LA, really wants to run for Governor in 2010, which means that he'd just as soon see Schwarzenegger in office until then, the result of which is that he withheld his endorsement from Angelides until late September. Who knows, though? Perhaps he just doesn't like Angelides. Hard to blame him either way.

Here's my promise: anyone who engages in attack ads loses my vote. I'll choose from whomever's left.
