Gardening & wildlife update
Jun. 6th, 2006 08:19 amWe went to see the finale of "The Apprentice" yesterday, but I'll allow Donna to write that up if she wishes.
Gardening: My little patio garden is doing pretty well. The jasmine plants(photo) are just full of fragrant flowers right now, as the photo shows. Our mini-roses have gotten a few flowers on them so far, which is good considering they're container plants - the identical species I planted at the house on Quartz has had a ton of blossoms, so probably the ones I have here are rootbound. The strawberry plant is doing well, though I do have to keep it watered or it gets droopy in the afternoon heat. Chives, aloe, spider plant all doing well. The Easter lily is liking the larger pot I put it in a month ago, though probably no prospects of getting any more flowers off it. Even the mini Christmas pine tree is holding its own, though it really needs to be in the ground to grow.
We're probably going to give all of them away before we move, with the only exceptions being the two miniature roses and the spider plant. I've had the aloe for years and years, since before Columbus, but the thing is just huge now and probably not worth transporting - its not like aloe is a rare species. The jasmine is just a joy right now, but it probably needs to stay in this climate to do well.
Wildlife: We've been having a scrub jay start to drop by our patio the past few days, so we've been putting out peanuts to keep him happy. The cats have been fascinated by the bird when it drops by, though of course they can't get to it (being inside-only). We also had a Cooper's hawk(photo) on the phone pole outside our apartment yesterday - I think its the same one that the local crows have been fighting an on-and-off noisy areal battle with the past few weeks.
Our indoors wildlife has continued their struggle against the dreaded laundry!(photo) Unfortunately, a new load seems to be generated every other day, so a cat's work is never done...
